Toprol/Metoprolol Side effects? I've been taking this for about 5 months now. Just recently (they are having a shortage so they are out of the succinate i was told by my pharmacist), I am taking the tartrate (100MG /day) instead of the succinate. The succinate had been working excellent, i felt normal again... then the "shortage" came...the tartrates didnt and dont work so well... I still get the racing heart after eating, my BP is still high sometimes, still feel dizzy, lightheaded, etc. Over the past few days, i have been getting palpitations, that last for hours, or go on throughout the day, within a 1/2 hour of taking the pill...I've been taking a 1/2 a pill at a time, but that didnt make any difference.. im gonna give my cardiologist a call in the AM. Is there any medication similar to the benefits of metoprolol that i could maybe suggest??
Anatomy replied: "drugs that end in -olol are called betablockers and there are many of them. dont worry, your cardiologist will be familiar with the different medical angles available to attack your problem. dont hessitate to talk more with the pharmacist in the future. those guys are more familiar with individual drug manufacturers. and when in doubt, you can call the pharmaceutical company that is short right now and ask them to recommend a similar medication."
What side effects did you experience being on metoprolol(lopressor)? I take half of a 25mg in the morning and the other half at dinner time. I've been dizzy, cold, tired, haven't been sleeping well, felt like my heart is racing and sometimes my blood pressure or my pulse are up in between doses. I'm waiting to hear back from my cardiologist.
I have a digital blood pressure monitor that I use to take my blood pressure and pulse. My bp was 130/96 this morning and my pulse was 96 before medication. Usually my diastolic blood pressure is higher.
I have been on lopressor since April 27th. Before that I was on hctz.
maximmihai replied: "my question, if homosexuality is mental disease,it had been deleted by community guideline.why? possible talk about sex and prostitution but no about homosexuality.why?"
cheetah replied: "This drug is in the beta-blocker class. It can cause some mild fatigue, and some coolness of the extremities. It normally slows the heart rate, so I say you need an extended release version, such as Toprol XL, to prevent spikes in blood pressure/heart rate. You may ask your doctor if an "extended release" version is more appropriate for you."
yadayadayada replied: "usually you see blood pressure and heart rate lowered with lopressor. Do you know how to check your pulse or have a way to check BP so that you can tell your cardiologist when he calls back. Also, that's pretty low dosage for high bp. It may not be the drug, but your underlying high b/p and higher heart rate - the other signs, dizzy and tired are pretty common but should resolve once your body gets used to it."
beth_fernandez18 replied: "my dad takes the same thing he gets tired and dizzy and sometimes light headed"
drsuria_cbe replied: "Side effects: Nausea,Diarrhea or constipation, stomach discomfort, palpitation, edema, bronchospasm, insomnia, Bradycardia, ,weakness, cold extremities, gastro-intestinal and sleep disturbances skin rashes and dry eyes.significant rise ind certain cholesterols. ."
Alli replied: "* an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives);
* wheezing or shortness of breath;
* an unusually slow or irregular heartbeat;
* swelling of the feet and lower legs;
* leg pain or cramping;
* sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in one week);
* chest (heart) pain;
* unusually cold or blue feet and hands; or
* skin rash.
If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking metoprolol and talk to your doctor:
* fatigue or confusion;
* headache or dizziness;
* weak pulse or mildly slow heart rate;
* diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea, or vomiting;
* depression; or
* nightmares."
mnvikes8484 replied: "i felt the same way when i was on atenolol (very similar drug, both are beta blockers). you can feel cold, dizzy, and tired because it reduces the amount of blood your heart pumps. your body adjusts some to the side effects after a couple weeks. if you skip a dose or stop taking the medication suddenly, your heart can race, because your body adjusts to having the metoprolol in your system. when the metoprolol is no longer there, your heart rate and blood pressure increase. cutting the tablets into quarters and taking one in the morning and one at night may help, but ask your cardiologist before you do it. also, i know theyre little guys so cutting them into quarters might not work well.
anyway, if you really dont like beta blockers you could see if he'll switch you to another drug like an ace inhibitor. dont just suddenly stop taking it or your problems can get worse. i didnt stay on atenolol very long bc i got too tired when i went jogging or swimming"
Amileapart f replied: "i think that your cardiologist is try to control your BP and your tachycardia. metoprolol is also used for those indication but its not a 24 hr BP control. i think that he will give you another set of drugs. ask your doctor for another diagnostic test (ecg or 3d echo) which ever he decides and tell these complaints. i think that he'll give you combination therapy this time (2 drugs or more eg. verapamil-for your palpitation plus amlodipine or nifedipine for our bp )"
are these side effects im having from metoprolol (generic form of toprol) for my supraventricular tachycardia? Supraventricular tachycardia is a rapid heart beat (250bpm)
I'm 17 I weigh 130pnds and I'm at 5'' 10 tall
I'm experiencing:
Loss of appetit (hungry but can't eat but eventually I will)
Weak when walking around like I'm out of shape in 5 min
Can get tired sometimes
Get temporary tingling on finger tips
I just started taking 25mg once for everyday and began taking them yesterday.. are they normal side effects and will they pass soon? I also noticed my limbs will go tingly easily manipulated like crossing my legs. I take the beta blockers for my supraventricular tachycardia
pharmacymom replied: "The beta blockers lower your blood pressure, so they can cause you to feel out of breath, tired, dizzy when standing up, and make you feel tingly from the decreased circulation."
versantly replied: "inform your doctor and let the medical professional decide."
seediph replied: "Depending on the SVT you have, you might be able to get a minor procedure called an ablation and get rid of the problem once and for all. The type of cardiologist that does this is called an electrophysiologist. You might consider talking with your parents about seeing one. After the ablation you would not need metoprolol at all. All the symptoms you describe might be attributable to metoprolol side effects. Young people seem to be especially sensitive to these medicines.
Advice offered here is not meant to be a replacement for proper evaluation and examination by a qualified medical professional and should not be construed as such"
James G replied: "Well I am on the same medication right now Since I also have SVT, This medicine is made to help your heart demand less oxygen therefore making it beat more efficiently. It also controls blood pressure. Therefore I would say that those symptoms are pretty typical of Metoprolol Succinate use. For me, I have also had abdominal and chest pain. (i really don't think that Beta blockers are supposed to cause that Its supposed to manage that)
But remember if you feel really feint then you should get emergency medical care."
metoprolol side effect? I have been on 25mg of metoprolol xl with no problems for over 2 years now. About 3 weeks ago the pharmacy changed my usual metoprolol manufacturer to a different manufacturer.
Since then I haven't been feeling so good. Sometimes my heart will feel like its racing and I feel really tired and run down. I sometimes check my blood pressure at home and it usually runs 105/60 sometimes a little higher and sometimes a little lower.
I take my medication in the late evening and last night I decided not to take my metoprolol and today for the first time in a long time I felt really good! No racing heartbeat and I actually had energy.
I haven't seen my regular doctor yet, but I was thinking that maybe this different brand could be making me feel like this. But is it even possible?
lilly of the valley replied: "For those who are taking metoprolol, side effects may occur, including nausea, tiredness, shortness of breath, or slow heart rate. Other less common side effects that are reported in less than 1 percent of patients include increased liver enzymes, weight gain, and dry eyes. Metoprolol side effects are generally considered minor and do not require medical attention, but if you experience serious problems such as irregular heartbeat or chest pain, be sure to notify your healthcare provider immediately."
